The Emmett Christopher Barney Foundation was founded in loving memory of Emmett Christopher Barney, affectionately known as Chris, a young soul who was tragically taken from us in November 2021. Through this organization, the founders seek to commemorate Chris’s life by making lasting impacts in areas that held special significance to him, ensuring his legacy lives on through meaningful initiatives and contributions to the community.

The Emmett C. Barney Scholarship
The Emmett C. Barney Scholarship is an annual award presented to two freshmen in the spring before their first semester of college. Each recipient receives a $500 scholarship.
This scholarship is granted to students residing in inner-city areas who demonstrate commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and express financial need.
The primary goal of this award is to assist in smoothing the transition from the often chaotic city life to the challenges and opportunities of college life.
It is our sincere hope that this award will alleviate some of the financial burden associated with college tuition, encouraging students to persevere in their educational journey with renewed determination.

Emmett Christopher Barney
Emmett Christopher Barney, affectionately called Chris, was known for his warm smile and easygoing nature. Tragically, he passed away at thirty-three in November 2021. Raised in Los Angeles, Chris excelled academically at inner-city schools. After graduating from Dorsey High School with honors, he chose Morehouse College for his Bachelor’s in Business Administration and later earned an MBA from Strayer University.
Chris spent twelve years at Verizon, rising through the ranks before landing a promising role at Honeywell. His love for music, concerts, cooking, and creating cherished memories with loved ones defined his life.
Chris’s genuine warmth and ability to make people feel at ease made him the life of the party. Despite his short life, he achieved remarkable success, leaving a legacy of authenticity, kindness, and a deep appreciation for life’s moments.
Meet Our Founder
Andrea M. Alston
Andrea Alston, Chris’s mother and best friend, wishes to impart her insights on nurturing children with the knowledge needed to excel in society. Hailing from Los Angeles and as a single mother, she draws from her own journey in raising her three sons: Chris, Kenneth, and Thomas, each of whom she successfully guided to maturity.
In establishing this foundation, Andrea Alston is driven by a deep intention to make a lasting impact and to honor the legacy of her beloved son, Chris. It is with this intention, and the memory of Chris’s bright spirit, that she has devoted herself to creating a brighter future for others, ensuring that his warmth and kindness continue to touch lives through the work of the foundation.
